In January, big fires started in Los Angeles, California. On January 9th, when this news story was written, some fires were still burning. One fire destroyed about 1,000 buildings. This was the worst fire in the city's history. Homes, stores, and important places were burned. Sadly, five people died. The situation changed every day.

Because of the fires, over 130,000 people had to evacuate their homes. Some people stayed in safe shelters. Many schools and roads were closed. More than 1.5 million people lost electricity. Officials asked people to use less water because firefighters needed a lot of water to fight the fires.

People are starting to help and recover now . California's governor, Gavin Newsom, talked about this on January 9th. He said over 7,500 firefighters are working hard with helpers from different groups to fight these big fires in California.
